Purpose Pathways

From the circle to a career in youth development

Purpose Pathways is Greater Denver CARES’ career pathways program. It prepares young adults to become the next generation of mentors, facilitators and youth development professionals, the people our communities need most. Participants earn a paycheck while they learn, gain hands-on experience with young people, and finish with a nationally recognized credential.

In partnership with FHI 360

Greater Denver CARES is an employer partner in the U.S. Department of Labor–registered Youth Development Practitioner Apprenticeship led by FHI 360’s National Institute for Work and Learning. FHI 360 provides the nationally recognized training curriculum, and Greater Denver CARES provides paid, on-the-job learning with youth in schools and community sites across Denver.

Youth Development Practitioner Apprenticeship

A Youth Development Practitioner works directly with young people in schools, afterschool programs and community settings. They build trusting relationships, lead activities and group sessions, support young people’s social and emotional growth, and connect youth and families to the resources they need. It is the professional foundation for careers as a mentor, facilitator, program coordinator and beyond.

  • Paid, part-time work of about 20 hours a week, with raises as you build skills
  • On-the-job learning alongside experienced Greater Denver CARES facilitators
  • Related instruction through FHI 360’s youth development curriculum
  • A U.S. Department of Labor Certificate of Completion after about two years

Who it’s for: Adults 18 and older who care about young people and want a career in youth work. No degree is required.

Coming soon: Peer Support Specialist

We are building a second pathway to train Peer Support Specialists, young adults who use their own lived experience to support other young people’s mental health and wellness. Peer Support Specialists walk alongside youth, listen without judgment and help them connect to care. Stay tuned for details.
